The Art of Trial
Courtroom artists have documented legal proceedings for centuries, providing visual records when photography was restricted or prohibited. Their role became especially prominent in the 20th century, as cameras were often barred from courtrooms to preserve fairness and decorum. Using quick techniques such as pastel, charcoal, and pencil, courtroom artists must work swiftly and discreetly. Today, even as some courts allow cameras, courtroom artists remain essential in jurisdictions where visual recording is limited, preserving the human drama of the justice system.
Congratulations to Ruth Vasquez, a senior at Parkdale High School in Prince George’s County, who is our inaugural MYLaw Mock Trial Courtroom sketch artist champion!
