2026 Case: Ballan v. Chesapeake Corrections, Inc. and Dylan Oberfeld

A New Look for the Mock Trial Casebook
This year’s Casebook will look a little different! It includes only the core “case file” materials—Pleadings, Stipulations, Special Instructions/Stipulations, and Affidavits/Depositions—along with the rubric and score sheet. All other resources and materials, including Exhibits, will now be available right here on our website. In future years, expect all materials to be online.

There are changes to some of the rules, language, and procedures this year, too. Read Parts I-IV thoroughly. To highlight a couple of changes:

Closing Arguments: Closings will now follow real-world courtroom procedure in that Plaintiff/Prosecution goes first, followed by Defense, followed by (if time permits and Plaintiff/Prosecution desires) a rebuttal by the Plaintiff/Prosecution. The time limit for closings have increased from 7 to 8 minutes. [Maryland Mock Trial Procedures XI]

Team Information Exchange: In addition to witness gender exchange, Plaintiff’s counsel must inform Defendants’ counsel no less than 24 hours in advance of the competition start time, which counts they will pursue at trial. Plaintiff's counsel shall inform the Court which Counts will be pursued during the Court’s hearing of preliminary matters prior to trial. [Stipulations/ Rulings #2]
