Message to past participants:

1. Save the Date: Saturday, May 4th, 2024. We will again be in Tydings Hall. Registration will begin at 9:30 with orientation and opening rounds to follow. We will follow the same format as last year: each competitor will argue once for petitioner and once for respondent. The top 16 competitors will advance to the elimination rounds.

2. For the competition, we will use a shortened version of the 2023-2024 American Moot Court Association (AMCA) problem. If you'd like to get a head start, you can find the full version on their website. We will only argue issue 1. The problem will be available soon.

3. Registration. There is a slight change to registration this year. First, we will initially limit each school to 2 competitors, but each school may register an additional 3 students as standby competitors. Each “team” is comprised of one student. The competition will be limited to 32 competitors. If we do not initially reach capacity, we will send invites to standby competitors. Please clearly indicate your two designated competitors and your standby competitors. You should list your standby competitors in the order you prefer them to receive invitations. On Sunday March 17, I will extend Invitations to standby competitors, one student per school in the order that registrations were received until all slots are filled.

4. Fees. This year we will also be levying a per team registration fee. The fee is $20 per team and can be paid to Terps Moot Court using Venmo. (The fee will cover our costs of providing lunch and refreshments to our judges.) You will be provided payment details when you register your teams. The fee is due no later than 1 week from the date you register. If the fee is not paid, then the slot will be offered to someone on the standby list.

5. Scholarships. We will again offer a UMD scholarship to our winner and our runner up ($1000 and $750, respectively).

6. Coaches. As we did last year, we will also offer you the opportunity to have a UMD student coach for your teams. I will also be hosting a zoom call for all competitors and coaches once registration has opened. A specific date/time will follow shortly. A coaches’ zoom call is scheduled on March 14 at 7pm. Invites are forthcoming.

The University of Maryland completed the 2022-2023 collegiate mock trial season as the 5th ranked moot court team in the country (out of 200 that competed).

This Moot Court Competition is being organized by Professor Michael Spivey and UMD-CP students.
