Law Day 2016

On Monday, May 2, more than 200 students from across the state came together for a day of learning and networking. Keynote speaker and Chief Judge Mary Ellen Barbera spoke to students about the importance of Miranda. Professor Byron Warnken followed with a closer look at the significance of Miranda now - fifty years after the Miranda v. Arizona case was decided. Sessions included a mock Suppression Hearing, a murder investigation, Miranda in Real Life versus on TV, and more. See photos from the day's event.

Each year, the Law Day Conferences focuses on a different law-related topic. Registration is open to all Maryland high schools, public and private, as well as educators, administrators and community members.

2016 Focus:

2016 marks the 50th anniversary of perhaps the best-known U.S. Supreme Court case, Miranda v. Arizona.
The Miranda Warning has become ingrained in law enforcement and has permeated popular consciousness through countless recitations in films and television shows. Yet Miranda is only part of the story when it comes to the procedures for ensuring justice.

The 2016 Law Day theme “Miranda: More than Words” will explore the procedural protections afforded to all of us by the U.S. Constitution, how these rights are safeguarded by the courts, and why the preservation of these principles is essential to our liberty.
